Lantau Island, An Island With Many Attractions
Lantau Island has many sights and attractions in the area, such as the Tian Tan Buddha, Tai O, Hong Kong Disneyland and many others. Lantau Island is a massive island from the Hong Kong Islands. Lantau in Chinese means Ragged Head. This Island is situated near the Pearl River expanding in an area of 146 square kilometers. It is one of the Islands that have witnessed major infrastructural projects during the past few years. Some of the most notable of these developments are Hong Kong Disneyland, Ngong Ping 360 and the new international airport in Hong Kong, a stark contrast to the quiet fishing village that once inhabited the area.One can find the Tian Tan Buddha also known as the "Giant Buddha" upon the Ngong Ping Plateau. The Tian Tan Buddha stands at a height of 85 feet. The statue is made of bronze. One can also find numerous monasteries in the surrounding area of the statue. There also lies a vegetarian restaurant on top of this plateau. A twenty five minute cable car ride from Tung Chung to the plateau provides for a fast access route. Walking the same distance would take approximately two hours. The cable car route is well worth its 25 minutes. The Ngong Ping Cable Car provides an excellent opportunity to witness the marvelous country side of the region.
One can also find a fishing village that goes by the name Tai O along the north west of the island. This village is said to be over 300 years old. It is also possible to witness numerous fishing boats, stilt houses and waterways in the village. Make it also an opportunity to take a bite of locally made traditional Chinese food such as shrimp paste and salted fish.
